We are pleased to announce that Dovetail has added a new Associate, Ethan Askey, to our consulting team.

In addition to his facilitation and project management experience, he contributes specialized knowledge in the areas of land and environmental planning, aquatic and riparian habitat protection, soil erosion and sediment control, environmental baseline and trends assessment, impact mitigation, regulatory permitting and compliance, and other aspects of environmental management.

We are thrilled to welcome Ethan to the Dovetail family!

Facilitation and Conflict Resolution Training at Hollyhock, Spring 2010

Julian Griggs will be delivering a 5-day facilitation training course entitled The Art and Craft of Effective Group Facilitation from May 10-14, 2010 at the Hollyhock retreat centre on Cortes Island, BC.

In cooperation with Michelle LeBaron from UBC's dispute resolution program, Julian will also be delivering a 5-day course entitled Conflict Resolution: Practical Strategies for Tranformation and Relationship Building at Hollyhock from June 9-13, 2010. See Training for more details.

Community leaders forge ahead on the Coquitlam River Watershed Strategy

Project leaders from the City of Coquitlam and Kwikwetlem First Nation are being assisted by Julie Gardner in a governance strategy for the Coquitlam River Watershed. This is phase III in an ambitious, community-based project to improve collaboration in watershed management.

Ongoing contributions to wild salmon conservation

A report released in 2009, co-edited by Dovetail Principal Julie Gardner (with Scott Hinch), helps to explain the mystery of Fraser River Sockeye declines. This is the proceedings of a Conference on Early Migration and Premature Mortality in Fraser River Late-Run Sockeye Salmon. Julie Gardner facilitated the conference.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is due to review its Wild Salmon Policy in 2010. On behalf of DFO, the Pacific Fisheries Resource Conservation Council contracted Julie Gardner to carry out interviews with key stakeholders and propose a framework for the review. (See also Wild Salmon Conservation Research and Planning under Projects.)

Julian Griggs Secures IAF Certification

Julian Griggs recently completed the requirements to secure accreditation from the International Association of Facilitators (IAF) as a "Certified Professional Facilitator©." Julian becomes one of only a dozen or so professionals in BC with this level of professional certification.

Research on Collaborative Management Arrangement Completed for the Mukswa-Kechika Management Area

Julian Griggs and a colleague, David Luff, Inukshuk Consulting, recently completed a detailed hindsight evaluation of Muskwa-Kechika Management Area (1998-2008) as an example of a collaborative management arrangement for the implementation of a land use agreement. The results of this study were presented at the BC Protected Areas Research Forum in Prince George, BC in December 2008, and also to the Muskwa-Kechika Advisory Board in Mackenzie in March 2009. Partial funding for this research initiative was kindly provided by the Wilburforce Foundation and the Brainerd Foundation.

Presentation at University of Alaska Fairbanks, November 2009

Julian Griggs was an invited presentor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in November 2009, courtesy of the UAF Chancellor, the Northern Leadership Centre, and the Resilience and Adapatation Program. Julian's presentation was entitled "An Insider's View of Collaboration: Lessons from a Decade of Multi-stakeholder Conservation Planning in BC's Muskwa-Kechika Management Area." Julian also delivered a 3-day training program on group facilitation for UAF faculty and students.
